Well-written and well-edited web content is essential for any website. People go to the web to read, whether they really realize it or not. Sure, there are a lot of games, videos and a variety of other activities that can be performed on the Internet, but it all involves reading in one form or another. This means that when you are designing a website and developing its content you need to consider the writing style that will be used on it.
Writing for the web is different and it is important to realize that when you are developing your content. People who are on the Internet read things differently than they would read a book, magazine or newspaper. One reason for this is that it is harder to read on the web than it is to read on paper. Computer monitors tend to make things look a little fuzzy and this means you have to adjust your writing style to make it easier on the reader. Also, people on the web tend to scan instead of read pages word for word.
On the web, shorter is always better. This often translates into a more conversational writing style as well. Documents that are intended for the Internet should not go beyond 1,000 words. In fact, 600 to 700 may even be too long in some cases. This means that the writer needs to be able to write concisely and should cut out words that are not a necessity to use.
Remember that people are coming to a site for a specific reason. Perhaps they want to know the best way to get ants out of their gardens. If this is the case, then you would want to start your content off with that main idea in mind. Start off with, “The best way to get ants out of your garden” instead of, “When I was a child, my grandmother had a problem with ants in her garden. After we watched them eat the leaves we decided to do something about them.” Now, if you were writing a gardening book that was going to be printed, then the second sentence would probably be a good way to start out your section on killing ants. If you’re writing for the web, the reader is already frantically looking for the cure, not your recollection of ants in your grandma’s garden. Indirect beginnings are excellent in some situations, just not on the Internet. People on the web are looking for information and you want to make it easy for them to find. If you do, they will thank you by coming back to your website over and over again.
Now, there are some situations in which you’re going to want to use a more professional style of writing. You may want to appear to be the ultimate authority on a particular topic and you want the content to come across as if you are the only person in the world who knows it. If this is so, then you may want to revert back to the style of essay writing that you learned in school. This type of professional content does have its place on the web; you just have to be able to recognize when to use it. If you elect to use a professional writer, ask them what their experiences have been and if they can advise you on the type of content they think is appropriate. If they are professional, then they should be able to guide you in this area and provide you with samples of their writing in different styles.
