Web Content for Structure

Aside from the words on your actual pages, you will also want some informative content and structural content as well.  This type of content can be in the form of RSS feeds, blog postings and even advertisements.  This type of content provides structure to a website and it gives you something to fill in on the side.

A lot of people are leaning towards RSS feeds of the news, blog postings, forum postings and similar types of items as they are constantly changing and keep the pages of a site with fresh content at all times.  RSS feeds can be obtained from a variety of places including some of the most popular news channels and newspapers.  You can even search for specific topics and use RSS feeds that contain news articles that relate directly to what your website is about.  Google also offers RSS feeds featuring news stories from all around the world.

Advertisements are great because you obtain them from a number of sources and you can make money off of them at the same time.  Google AdSense is great because it allows you to sign up for a free account and place blocks of advertisements on your website.  These ads use your content to determine what your site is about and then they place relevant advertisements on your site.  If an ad peaks the interest of a visitor and they click through the ad, you make money off of those click throughs.   As a site grows, you may be able to sell advertising space on your site or you may want to use affiliate advertising banners, etc. on your website.  All of these types of ads, however, will add structure to your site as well as content.

Headings and Sub-Headings

Headings and sub-headings also provide structure to a website.  These are important to use, otherwise your content looks like long block of text that nobody wants to read.  By using descriptive headings and sub-headings you are also allowing your users to quickly view the content that they are looking for.  Headings and sub-headings break your pages into readable chunks of information that is much easier to find and a lot easier on the eyes.

Articles and Blogs

A well built website will also use articles and other informational content.  This type of content adds structure to your website as it allows you a way to place leaders on your homepages that will lead people deeper into your site to read more.  You can place small boxes on your homepage that has just a couple of sentences from an article and then a link that says “read more.”  This type of content not only allows you to have structure on your pages, but it gives you a lot of content that has a lot of potential for keyword optimization and search engine optimization.

Blogs are great because you are always adding content to them.  You can use leaders for blog postings as well on a site and you can use RSS feeds for blogs so that your pages always have a lead in of a new blog posting on them.  Blogs are picked up easily by search engines because their content is always fresh and keeps the search engine spiders coming back to all of that new content on a regular basis, which in turn moves you up on the search engine pages.
